Accounting firm in the canton of Bern

The only canton we cover where French is not the main language, and the one where our clients are a linguistic minority at home.

Doing business in a mainly German-speaking canton

  1. An administration that works mainly in German

The canton is officially bilingual, French and German, but its administration works mostly in German. Biel/Bienne and the Bernese Jura are the exception. For a company operating in English, correspondence, forms and cantonal practice arrive in a third language.

  2. Biel/Bienne and the Bernese Jura

Two French-speaking or bilingual regions, with an industrial and watchmaking fabric. This is where the canton's French-speaking businesses are concentrated.

  3. Bern's calendar and practice

In the canton of Bern, tax matters are handled by the Bern Tax Office (Intendance des impôts du canton de Berne). Filing deadlines and extension arrangements follow the canton's own practice. Filings can be made in French.

For individuals, the ordinary filing deadline is 15 March, and 15 May for the self-employed. An online extension can be obtained free of charge until 15 July, then subject to a charge of CHF 20 until 15 September and CHF 40 until 15 November, which is the final deadline.

To challenge a tax assessment, an objection must be filed within 30 days of its notification.

For withholding tax, the canton publishes two sets of tariffs, with or without parish tax depending on membership of a recognised church.
